The Pont-Neuf Metro station is located at the intersection of the Pont-Neuf and the Quai du Louvre. Officially named Pont-Neuf-La Monnaie, it provides direct access to the Hôtel de la Monnaie de Paris, the headquarters of the French Mint. It is one of Paris’s cultural Metro stations.

The Pont-Neuf Metro station is also part of Line 1, the city’s first metro line, which was inaugurated during the 1900 Universal Exposition. This iconic line runs along the Rive Droite – Right Bank of the Seine, providing essential connections throughout the capital.

Although its name might evoke the nearby bridge, the Pont-Neuf Metro station actually takes its name from the nearby Place Dauphine, originally called Place du Pont Neuf.

The station’s architecture, characterised by its elegant arches and ornate ironwork, pays homage to the prestigious Monnaie de Paris (mint). The walls of the vaulted platforms are indeed decorated with reproductions of coins from different eras and cultures. They recount monetary history, as well as the know-how and innovation that led to the creation of currency. Among the numerous display cases at the Pont-Neuf-La Monnaie metro station, two prominently displayed showcase authentic coins alongside an antique coin press.

La Monnaie de Paris – Paris Mint

The Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) is the oldest French institution. Founded by King Charles the Bald in 864, it not only officially established the production of coins in the Kingdom of France but also played a crucial role in shaping the country’s monetary system and economic policy over the centuries.

The current Hôtel de la Monnaie is located on the Quai Conti, on the banks of the Seine. Built between 1767 and 1775, it was designed by the architect Jacques-Denis Antoine and is lined with elegant buildings considered among the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in Paris.

For centuries, the Monnaie de Paris has been the primary centre for the production of coins and medals for the French state. It boasts state-of-the-art minting facilities and employs skilled artisans to produce high-quality numismatic coins.

The Hôtel de la Monnaie remains the headquarters of the Monnaie de Paris today, perpetuating its heritage while embracing modern technologies. The building also houses the Musée de la Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint Museum), which presents a vast collection of coins, medals and other numismatic objects that offer insight into the history of money and monetary systems through exhibits of rare coins, historical objects and interactive displays.
