The tradition of exchanging Christmas gifts originates from the celebration of Epiphany, where it symbolises the gifts offered to Jesus by the Three Wise Men.
Beyond its symbolic dimension, giving gifts at Christmas is a sincere expression of love and appreciation towards others. It constitutes the highlight of the holiday season for children as well as parents.
While waiting for Santa Claus to arrive, children often place their stockings near the fireplace, where Saint Nicholas can leave gifts. Alongside the presents, a glass of milk is placed on the mantelpiece to quench Santa’s thirst during his rounds.
Although in the past Christmas gifts consisted of small candies, fruits or trinkets that easily slipped into stockings, modern times have changed the game. Today, smartphones and other electronic devices reign supreme, their size perfectly matching that of a Christmas stocking.
However, it is important to remember that the gifts offered by the Three Wise Men to the Infant Jesus were prestigious and loaded with symbolism, reminding us of the profound meaning of this tradition so dear to our hearts.
Symbolism of the Three Wise Men’s presents
The meaning of Christmas presents is truly captivating, deeply rooted in symbolism and tradition.
The first gift, gold, represented royalty, symbolising the majesty of Jesus’ birth. The second gift, frankincense, symbolised divinity, reflecting the sacred and spiritual dimension of Jesus’ life and mission. It comes from the sap of certain trees of the genus Boswellia, and forms yellow droplets when it dries.
The third gift, myrrh, symbolised redemptive suffering. This fragrant resin, harvested from shrubs of the genus Commiphora, was used not only as incense but also as a beauty ointment, perfume and for embalming. Its rarity and high demand have ultimately made it as valuable as gold.
Although the symbolic meaning of these gifts is often overlooked, seeing young children’s excitement as they tear open the wrapping paper to discover their presents is a timeless reminder of the joy and wonder that Christmas brings.
