Merovingian necropolis
The church of St Pierre de Toirac is located in a charming fortified village, nestled about fifteen kilometres southwest of Figeac.
Despite its small size, this village holds architectural marvels.
Surrounded by its original fortifications, it is accessed through a beautifully restored gate.
Locals say that a priory and its chapel were erected in 889, on land given by the Bishop of Rodez to the Saint-Sauveur monastery of Figeac.
Archaeological excavations carried out in 2008 unearthed a Merovingian necropolis.
A dozen stone sarcophagi are now on display outside the church.
St Pierre Toirac Church’s architecture
The fortified St Pierre Toirac Church replaced an earlier chapel, built at the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century.
Over the following centuries, the church was fortified between the 14th and 17th centuries.
This architectural gem is thus renowned for its harmonious blend of military, Romanesque and Gothic styles. St
St Pierre Toirac Church exudes an aura of austere grandeur, like an imposing fortress.
Its exterior ornamentation is understated. The only decorative element is a fragment of the superb original Romanesque tympanum, now embedded in the wall next to the 17th-century neoclassical portal.
It depicts Samson slaying the lion, with an angel to his right.
However, the church’s austere exterior gives no hint of the beauty of its interior, which boasts a veritable treasure trove of Romanesque sculptures!
The exquisite capitals, adorned with intricate interlacing patterns, depictions of angels, figures, and botanical motifs, are recognised as a superb illustration of Romanesque art at its best.
These refined ornaments showcase the elegant Gothic ribbed vaults and the resplendent stained-glass windows.
St Pierre Toirac Church was listed as a historical monument in 1903. This charming church is a must-see for art and medieval architecture amateurs!
