Château de Larroque Toirac, a semi-troglodyte castle

Perched on the side of a cliff, the majestic Château de Larroque Toirac overlooks the picturesque village nestled on the hillside and the meanders of the Lot Valley.
The village is full of charm. You will find a charming old dovecote, perched on stilts, along the winding path leading up to the castle parking lot.
The castle is a true semi-troglodytic marvel built in the 12th century right into the cliff. It suffered serious deterioration over time, but was largely restored. The rock still bears traces of the beams that once supported the roofs of the adjoining troglodytic dwellings and outbuildings.
The Lot Valley is renowned for its numerous cave dwellings.
Millennia of geological evolution have indeed carved deep canyons into the limestone plateaus, creating galleries and caves that served as shelters for our ancestors.
Château de Larroque Toirac during the Middle Ages
The Chateau de Larroque Toirac has survived centuries of tumultuous history. During the Hundred Years War, the English seized it and burned it on multiple occasions, but the French recaptured it and systematically rebuilt it.

The castle’s original fortifications have undergone gradual transformations over the centuries. The most dramatic transformation took place during the French Revolution when the imposing 30-meter-high round bastion was reduced to only 8 metres. The manor was converted into housing at the same time, but it bears the indelible traces of its former splendour despite the deterioration. Indeed, the old kitchen, the superb fireplaces and the 16th-century frescoes miraculously escaped destruction!
The Château de Larroque Toirac is a listed historical monument and was carefully restored and furnished with sumptuous 17th- and 18th-century furniture.
A small nod to modernity, one of its openings has been lovingly restored in the shape of a heart. This local tradition is believed to bring good luck to newlyweds.
