Fete des Remparts de Dinan - Celebration
Fete des Remparts, a medieval festival
The Fete des Remparts takes place every other year in the beautiful medieval city of Dinan.
The Society of Friends of the Museum and Library of Dinan created the festival in 1983.
They benefited from the assistance of the Tourist Office and the support of the municipality of Dinan.
The principal and initial objective of the organizers was to encourage the inhabitants of Dinan rediscover their cultural and architectural heritage.
It was also an opportunity to draw the Monuments of France's attention to the splendid 3km long ramparts.
They had traversed the centuries, however, some sections were badly in need of restoration!
The yearly festival grew from strength to strength until 1998.
It has taken place every other year since that date because of its success.
The Fete des Remparts enjoys a fantastic notoriety, and therefore attracts locals but also many tourists!
The festival has a different theme each time.
The next will be held in 2020*; make a note in your diary!
Visitors are encouraged to dress up in medieval costumes for the occasion.
Hiring a costume allows free access to the many shows organized on that weekend.
These include jousting, medieval markets and open-air dances among others.
The festival ends up with a great parade.
